What is the 2030 SDGs Game? /

The 2030 SDGs Game is a multiplayer, card-based simulation game designed by the Japanese team Imacocollabo in 2016. It uses role-playing and strategic decision-making to simulate various potential outcomes for humanity as we work towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The game revolves around the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (such as eliminating poverty, combating climate change, promoting gender equality, and building sustainable cities). Players must develop strategies with limited resources to achieve personal goals, all while experiencing how individual and collective decisions influence global development.

To date, the 2030 SDGs Game has engaged over 350,000 players worldwide across corporate, government, educational, and community settings. It is supported by 1,200 certified facilitators in Japan and approximately 100 globally. If you ever participate in a study program at the UN headquarters in Geneva or New York, or attend international governance training in Geneva, you might encounter the 2030 SDGs Game—it’s a regular training module used by the United Nations! The game has been translated into 9 languages.

How to Play the 2030 SDGs Game? /

The 2030 SDGs Game is a rare kind of in-person simulation game that can accommodate 10 to 50 players simultaneously. It has been described as an “unscripted murder mystery” or a “real-life version of The Sims.” The game is entirely player-driven, featuring completely open-ended outcomes, a fast pace, and highly engaging gameplay.

Each player is randomly assigned a personal goal (such as accumulating wealth, protecting the environment, or eliminating poverty). Using the resources at their disposal, players must select and execute various projects—each linked to specific SDGs—to achieve their objectives. Every action taken by each player influences the global development trajectory, which in turn impacts every individual’s path to success. The game emphasizes the delicate balance between People, Planet, and Prosperity, encouraging players to reflect on how their personal decisions resonate on a global scale.

What kind of world will we create by 2040? Can we achieve our personal goals? Can an individual like me truly influence the course of global development? Join us in co-creating our shared world—and discover the answers through gameplay!

Why Participate in the 2030 SDGs Game with Your Child? /

While the game serves as an excellent platform for understanding the SDGs, it also presents a valuable opportunity to deepen parent-child communication.

Amid the daily routines of schoolwork and chores, when was the last time you and your child faced a completely new challenge together? Or participated as equals—simply as two players in an activity? Or had the chance to carefully observe how your child interacts with others, handles difficulties, and pursues goals?

The 2030 SDGs Game provides precisely this opportunity. During the 2.5-hour session, parents and children can temporarily set aside the noise of daily life and immerse themselves in a player-created simulated world. Here, you can work towards goals, observe people and events, and discuss your strategies, observations, and how you might handle similar real-world situations encountered in the game.

The game also offers a uniquely neutral perspective. In this world, every player’s decision is respected and accepted. While differing goals can lead to conflicts of interest, there is no inherent “right” or “wrong,” “good” or “bad.” The world isn’t black and white; everyone has their own values and reasons for their choices. Understanding others, accepting them, and building empathy: these are abilities that require experience and practice to learn.

2030 SDGs Game

2030 SDGS Game
